Morning Mist

Once again, the wild horses of the Outer Banks in North Carolina, are elusive. I am on something of a redemption trip to these barrier islands. The first time I attempt to photograph them a couple of years ago, they barely make an appearance on the beach. When I return this spring, the horses again are not where I want them to be, instead they roam between the houses in the back of the dunes.

But perseverance and patience pays off. Though a lot of time is spent driving up and down the beach looking for the horses, one misty morning, my favorite time of day and weather, as if in a dream they slowly appear through the sea mist. On another day, the sky is clear, and another, the clouds move in. The waves are green, blue, and gray during my time there. Like the sky and the sea, the dunes are ever changing. But through all the skies and oceans over the centuries, the horses remain.

Since the 1500’s, they survive shipwrecks and abandonment and the harsh environment. They rest on the beach, play on the beach, raise their young, and fight on the beach. Though their numbers dwindle over the years, they remain an iconic symbol of the Outer Banks. I remain in awe of their beauty and determination.
Please note: If you go, do stay the recommended distance away from the horses for everyone’s safety
