In the Dunes

My love affair with Assateague Island begins long before I ever step foot on it.  As a child, I read “Misty of Chincoteague” by Marguerite Henry over and over and dream of going to see this magical island with the wild horses.

Decades later, I make the dream come true and visit this island that is part in Virginia and part in Maryland, each side with their own distinctive feel.  I return as often as I can.  On my most recent trip, this autumn, I am thrilled to see some young horses, still babies really.  It is pure joy to spend time with them.

Over the few days I am there, I find a few small herds, or bands as they are called.  I sit quietly and observe and photograph.  It is like a meditation being with the horses, their quiet energy seems to transcend the distance from them to me.

On my last day, I spot a horse in the dunes and I sit in the sand nearby.  It is at the very end of the day and there is a softness in the air, the sand, and the colors.  I sit in the quiet and for a time it feels as if the wild horse and I are the only two beings in the world.  I stay until the last of the light, reluctant to leave.  I have to head home early the next morning, but if I can pick any last moment to have on this trip, this is it.

If you go, please stay at the recommended distance from the horses as they are wild and can bite and kick.

As a small business owner, it is important for me to give back.  I donate a portion of the proceeds from any print sold to nonprofit organizations.
